Benefits and Council Tax

Council Tax Support

Council Tax Support formerly known as Council Tax Benefit, is a system which allows councils to give discounts on Council Tax bills to help people who have a low income. Unlike Housing Benefit payments, Council Tax Support cannot be backdated.

Am I eligible?

If you or your partner are working age and liable to pay Council Tax, you may be able entitled to receive a discount of up to 80% on your Council Tax bill. If you are of pensionable age you may be entitled to receive a discount of up to 100% on your council tax bill. 

Your benefit will be calculated based on the following:

  • your capital, including any savings
  • your income
  • the amount of Council Tax or rent you pay
  • your family circumstances

How to apply

If you need to make a new claim for Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Support, please visit our new claim webpage.

You will be able to submit evidence to support your claim at the end of the application process by uploading documents saved on your computer. You will in all cases need to provide evidence of all income or benefits received into your household to enable us to process your application. Please don’t delay in submitting a claim as you are able to provide any supporting evidence within 1 month of the claim submission to This email address is being protected from spambots. You should always quote your reference number given during the application if evidence is supplied at a later date to ensure it gets linked to your new application.

Start a new Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Support claim

You can take photographs of the documents on your mobile phone if you are unable to scan them and send them to us.

Application support

Our Contact Centre at Pershore will continue to provide support for people who do not have access to online facilities or who need assistance to make a claim.

For residents suffering from extreme, short-term financial hardship we may be able to offer limited short-term help through our Exceptional Hardship Fund. Read more about the Exceptional Hardship Fund

We may ask you to fill out a form and provide supporting evidence of your hardship.
