Defy dementia campaign

A group of people stood in front of some balloons and either side of a banner with some smiling people and Defy Dementia on it.

Take control of your dementia journey

Wychavon has the lowest dementia diagnosis rate in the West Midlands. We want to change that.

Our aim is for at least two thirds of people living with dementia in our district to recieve a formal diagnosis. Getting diagnosed not only creates an opportunity to plan for the future but also opens doors to a wide range of support.

About the campaign

There are many possible reasons people may not be seeking help with concerns about symptoms of dementia. These  include fear about the impact dementia will have on their life.

There is also a popular misconception that symptoms such as memory loss are just ‘part of getting old’ which prevents people from seeking help and vital treatment.

The Defy Dementia campaign wants to change that by reducing the fear around the condition and to highlight the range of local support on offer. There will be a particular focus on the Evesham area where GPs are strengthening their links with local dementia support organisations.

This will allow people to be directed to places where they can start building connections with people in similar situations. They can also get advice, even before they receive a formal diagnosis. This can help reduce isolation and loneliness amongst those with dementia.

There is strong evidence that bringing people together in their local community helps most people build resilience in coping with dementia. People can live well after a dementia diagnosis and adapt and socially develop. They can also maintain contact with family and friends, their local community and the professional services they need support from.

You don't have to face your dementia journey alone. Take control by accessing the help and support available.

Symptoms of dementia

Dementia is a collection of symptoms that result from damage to the brain caused by different diseases, such as Alzheimer's. These symptoms vary according to the part of the brain that is damaged.

While occasional memory loss can occur because of stress, anxiety or tiredness, if it is happening often enough to impact your daily life, or it is worrying you, then you should contact your GP for help.

Dementia isn't just about memory loss though. It can also affect how people speak and behave.

Find out more about the symptoms of dementia on the NHS website.
