Art focus for Wychavon’s new Chairman

Wychavon’s new Chairman has pledged to make promoting public art a key part of his year in the role.

Cllr George Duffy was presented with the Chairman’s chain at Wychavon’s Annual Council meeting on Wednesday (15 May).

He follows in the footsteps of his mum Lynne, after supporting her as a Wychavon councillor until 2018 and her year as Chairman in 2014.

Cllr Duffy was first elected at the age of 19 in 2016 and represents Droitwich West Ward. A former Mayor of Droitwich, he is known for the key role he played in engaging residents with the popular Droitwich Spa Underpass Arts Project. A man stood behind another man putting a mayoral chain over his head.

Cllr Duffy said: “I’m looking forward to my year as Chairman and hope to use it to raise awareness of the benefits public art can bring to our public meeting spaces, such as our town and village centres. If anyone has public art or public art opportunities in their area then please let me know as I would love to come and visit.”

Cllr Duffy takes over from Cllr Robert Raphael who carried out 191 visits during his year, including his tour of the district which saw him visit every parish area to mark Wychavon’s 50th anniversary.

Cllr Raphael said: “It was an honour to be Chairman during Wychavon’s 50th anniversary year. I have had the most amazing time meeting dedicated volunteers, committed businesspeople and discovering corners of this beautiful district I never knew existed.”

Cllr Mark Goodge, a former mayor of Evesham, was elected as Vice Chairman for the year.
