Shed some light on scheme's new location

Residents are being asked to offer their opinions on expanding a scheme that tackles loneliness by bringing men together to socialise, build and learn new skills.

Age UK Hereford and Worcestershire and Wychavon are working together to increase the number of Men in Sheds projects across the district. They are asking residents to let them know where a Shed is most needed by filling in an online survey.

There are currently three Sheds in the Wychavon area, Droitwich Spa, Inkberrow and Evesham. Some Shed members have a professional background in a trade, some are DIY enthusiasts, and some have no experience at all. All come together to enjoy a hot drink, a chat, and a chance to give back to their community by working on meaningful projects.

The Men in Sheds scheme originates from a 1990s project in Australia to tackle loneliness and social isolation. Members work on group DIY projects and connect while working together on outings, or over a cup of tea.

According to a recent YouGov poll, 67 per cent of UK men admitted not telling anyone when they felt lonely. Research by The Samaritans found middle-aged men are more likely to die by suicide than any other age group.

Cllr Rob Adams, Executive Board Member for Strong Communities, Culture and Sport, said: “Sheds support individuals by providing friendship, a sense of purpose and belonging. We have three great Sheds in our area run by the men who use them, but we could do with more. If you feel your community would benefit from a Shed, please let us know by filling out the questionnaire. We also need people to come forward to manage and lead the groups too.”
