Droitwich Spa residents are being called on to help transform the town’s street cabinets into works of art.
The green boxes, which house vital broadband and phone connections, are a recognisable feature on streets across the country. But they are often viewed as unsightly and can be vulnerable to graffiti.
Wychavon, together with cabinet owner Openreach, wants to change that and has teamed up with community public arts organisation WeTheSeeds to launch the Signals of Joy: Cabinet Mural Competition. The project will see nine cabinets turned into professional, hand-painted works of art, inspired by the stories, hopes and memories of the people of Droitwich Spa. WeTheSeeds already have experience of creating beautiful works of art in the town as they were the creative force behind the murals on Union Lane and The Talbot.
Anyone who lives, works or studies in Droitwich Spa is invited to take part in a community workshop, open to all ages, on Tuesday, 7 April, from 3pm to 5.30pm in the John Corbett Room of the Droitwich Spa Community Hall.
Stories of favourite places, joyful memories, moments in nature and hopes for the future will be turned into artwork ideas through cutting, sticking, drawing and sharing of ideas.
For those who can’t make the event, a worksheet can be downloaded from the Signals of Joy web page and submitted using the online entry form. Paper copies are also available from Droitwich Spa Heritage Centre and The Craft Café in Old Market Court on the High Street. Closing date for entries is 11 May, 2026.
Ideas and themes from the workshop and submitted forms will then be used to inspire hand-painted, professional works of art on street cabinets across Droitwich Spa.
The project builds on the success of other public art across Droitwich Spa, including the town centre murals and the Droitwich West Underpass Art Project.
Cllr Rob Adams, Wychavon’s Executive Board Member for Strong Communities, Culture and Sport, said: “I urge residents to answer the call and help turn an essential part of our communication infrastructure into a celebration of everything that makes Droitwich Spa special.”
Rikesh Patel, Creative Director of WeTheSeeds Public Arts Placemaking UK, said: “We need as many people to share their stories and ideas with us as possible so we can turn this overlooked infrastructure into beautiful markers of identity, community and change.”
