A special flag-raising ceremony took place in Pershore on Monday (23 June) to honour the country’s Armed Forces.
Cllr Mark Goodge, Chairman of Wychavon District Council, raised the Armed Forces Day flag high above the Civic Centre in Pershore as a visible show of support, ahead of Armed Forces Day on Saturday, 28 June.
Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to thank the Armed Forces community, which encompasses service personnel, service families, veterans, reservists, cadets, and volunteers, for all that they do. Across the world, the country’s armed forces are busy promoting peace, delivering aid, tackling drug smugglers, providing security, and fighting terrorism.
The ceremony provided an opportunity to reflect on their contributions and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Cllr Mark Goodge, Chairman of Wychavon District Council, said: “It was a privilege to be able to raise the Armed Forces Day flag in support of our Armed Forces community. It’s important we take time out to thank all those working hard around the world to protect us and recognise the sacrifices they and their families make on our behalf.”
Wychavon is signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant, a commitment to ensuring that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly and have the same access to government and commercial services as other individuals. As part of the Worcestershire Armed Forces Covenant Partnership, Wychavon works with partners, including Worcestershire County Council, voluntary and charitable organisations, to support veterans.
The Armed Forces flag will fly for a week until the end of Armed Forces Day on Saturday, 28 June, if residents wish to go along and show their respect.
