Work will begin on Monday 28 September on a small but meaningful public realm improvement scheme in Gurney’s Lane, Droitwich Spa.
The project aims to refresh this well-used route into the town centre and create a more welcoming space that supports the ambitions of the Droitwich Prospectus.
The scheme includes repairs to the historic structures on the site, which once formed part of the town’s salt pumping heritage. The existing planting is being replaced with colourful species chosen to reflect the area’s history, helping to soften the space and give it a much-needed lift. New accessible curved wooden seating will be installed to encourage people to pause and spend more time in the High Street, supporting local hospitality and retail businesses. A general tidy-up of the area is also being carried out.
Cllr Richard Morris, Leader of the Council and Executive Board Member for Economic Growth and Tourism, said, “Gurney’s Lane is a well-used route into Droitwich Spa town centre, and these improvements will help create a more attractive and welcoming space. The new seating, planting and heritage repairs will give the area a much-needed lift while supporting the wider ambitions of the Droitwich Prospectus. We hope it will encourage more people to pause, enjoy the High Street, and support local businesses.”
While the space is closed during the works, the walkway through to the High Street will remain open for pedestrians. The works are expected to take two to four weeks to complete, and before-and-after images will be shared once the project is finished.
