Wychavon has condemned repeated acts of vandalism and anti-social behaviour at the public toilets in Waterside, Evesham, after the facilities were targeted again – this time with significant damage.
The award-winning toilets are maintained to a high standard for residents and visitors. Over recent weeks, council staff have dealt with ongoing issues. Soap, air freshener, and toilet roll dispensers have been ripped from the walls. Baby changing units and toddler safety seats have been broken beyond repair. There have also been attempts to kick in locked cubicle doors and reports of verbal abuse directed at cleaning staff, as well as the daily theft of toilet rolls, although this has now stopped following changes to the dispensers.
Thanks to recent security improvements, including armouring around locks and the installation of more robust fittings, some issues had started to ease. However, the latest incident has caused extensive damage and is a significant setback for the council and the residents who rely on the facilities.
CCTV footage has identified some of those responsible, and the incidents have been reported to the police. Wychavon officers will liaise with local police officers in Evesham to support the investigation.
Despite the damage, the council has decided to keep the toilet block open. All damaged items have been removed, and replacement parts are being ordered. Repairs could take up to four weeks, depending on availability.
Cllr Beverley Hardman, Executive Board Member for Environment at Wychavon District Council, said: “This kind of mindless vandalism is not just a waste of public money – it’s a slap in the face to the vast majority of people who use and value these facilities.
“These are award-winning toilets, maintained to a high standard by a dedicated team who work hard every day to ensure they’re clean, safe and accessible to all. It’s upsetting to see their efforts undermined by this behaviour. We will continue to support the police in identifying those responsible and take steps to prevent further damage. I urge anyone with information to do the right thing and report it.”
Wychavon is encouraging members of the public to report any anti-social behaviour or vandalism to the police via 101 or online.
