Council Tax Support: What You Need to Know
Council Tax Support (previously called Council Tax Benefit) helps people on low incomes by reducing their Council Tax bill.
- For working-age applicants: We can apply any reduction to your bill from the Monday following you submitting your application so please apply as soon as possible. You could receive up to 80% off your bill.
- For pension-age applicants: We can backdate any reduction to your bill for up to three months before the date of your application. You could receive up to 100% off your bill.
Do I qualify?
If you qualify for Council Tax support then:
- if you or your partner are of working age and responsible for paying Council Tax. You could get up to 80% off your bill.
- if you or your partner are of pensionable age, you could get up to 100% off your bill.
The level of support you get will depend on:
- Your savings and capital (the capital limit is £16,000, unless you receive Guaranteed Pension Credit)
- Your income
- How much Council Tax you pay
- Your family circumstances
If you are in any doubt on whether you may be entitled to some help, we would always recommend you making a new claim as soon as possible to avoid losing out on a potential reduction.
