Council Tax Support

Council Tax Support: What You Need to Know

Council Tax Support (previously called Council Tax Benefit) helps people on low incomes by reducing their Council Tax bill.

  • For working-age applicants: We can apply any reduction to your bill from the Monday following you submitting your application so please apply as soon as possible. You could receive up to 80% off your bill.
  • For pension-age applicants: We can backdate any reduction to your bill for up to three months before the date of your application. You could receive up to 100% off your bill.

Do I qualify?

If you qualify for Council Tax support then:

  • if you or your partner are of working age and responsible for paying Council Tax. You could get up to 80% off your bill.
  • if you or your partner are of pensionable age, you could get up to 100% off your bill.

The level of support you get will depend on:

  • Your savings and capital (the capital limit is £16,000, unless you receive Guaranteed Pension Credit)
  • Your income
  • How much Council Tax you pay
  • Your family circumstances

If you are in any doubt on whether you may be entitled to some help, we would always recommend you making a new claim as soon as possible to avoid losing out on a potential reduction.
