Archaeological Fees

Wychavon District contains archaeological evidence from the Palaeolithic through all periods into modernity. The Severn and Avon valleys are land which has been occupied by people for thousands of years.

Development can impact upon archaeology, Wychavon District Council has its own archaeological advisor who can provide information regarding archaeological potential within the district to members of the public and developers.

Since April 2022 Wychavon District Council has been charging for archaeological curatorial services. The service includes advice and liaison throughout the planning process, including the provision of an archaeological brief (if requested), checking the Written Scheme of Investigation for compliance with local and national standards, monitoring fieldwork and ensuring any archaeological reports generated by the project are acceptable leading to the discharge of any archaeological conditions attached during the planning process.

The Archaeology and Planning Advisor will be happy to offer advice on all stages of the proceedings. There may also be a charge for additional site visits if required if it is considered that breaches of condition have taken place or when other situations arise that require a visit or written responses additional to the usual service.

Payment is normally based on the size of the development. Fees can vary dependent upon archaeological requirements which may alter from initial consultation to delivery.

Fees

Single dwelling - Watching brief or lower-level building recording: £75.00 (Inc VAT)

Complex watching brief/ building recording at Level 3 or 4: Minimum charge £123. Maximum charge £224 (Inc VAT)

Small development up to 1ha: £368.00 (Inc VAT)

Medium development 1-5ha: £664 (Inc VAT)

Large or strategic development 15ha and over: £1,360 (Inc VAT). Please note larger schemes are charged at a multiple based upon 15ha.

Discharge of condition from archaeological investigations when all reports have been previously approved: £70 (Inc VAT).

Minor trench evaluation or second stage mitigation after previous minor evaluation where fees have been received: Minimum charge £125. Maximum charge £248 (Inc VAT).

Pre Application advice

Small sites up to 1ha: £140 (Inc VAT)

Small-Medium sites 1-5 ha: £250 (Inc VAT)

Medium-Large sites 5-15 ha: £370 (Inc VAT)

Large sites 15-40ha: Minimum charge £480 (Inc VAT), Maximum charge £1215 (Inc VAT)

Sites over 40 ha will require a bespoke fee.

For the payment of archaeological curatorial fees:

A customer can phone planning support on 01386 565565, staff will allocate the payment to the ‘Archaeology Fee’. Please email the receipt when received to the Archaeology and Planning Advisor; This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Alternatively a customer can visit the Pay It page, select ‘Archaeology Fee’ from the drop down list. A payment reference is required which is normally the planning application number with the code ‘WARC’ instead of the application type, **/*****/WARC. This must be entered into ‘Your Reference’ field to be able to pay. Please email the receipt to the Archaeology and Planning Advisor for confirmation.

Archaeological pre-applications are acceptable and dealt with via a bespoke reference supplied by the Archaeology and Planning Advisor.
